Rainbow Activities for Kids

β€œWhen it rains, look for rainbows.”

Inspired by a local initiative to hang rainbows in your window, we spent the day immersed in rainbow activities. Here are some highlights! We hope they give you ideas for some fun at home with your little ones.

Work together to make a rainbow by tearing or cutting colored paper and gluing it to poster board, cardboard or a paper plate cut in half. This works on fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and we also learned the color names in Portuguese!

This is a colorful science project and a great introduction to color mixing. Use small glasses, paper towel, water and food coloring and watch the colors “walk”!

Start with primary colors: red, yellow and blue. Ask kids to predict: What will happen in the clear cups? Wait and see...

Get the babies involved too! My big kids wove rainbow strips of paper through a kitchen cooling rack. Baby Maya had the best time pulling the strips free!

What else can you use to make a rainbow? Lily (age 2.5) chose dot markers. Noah (age 5) chose legos!

Some other colorful activities not pictured included: making rainbow ice pops, eating rainbow snacks, reading Elmer by David McPhee, singing the Rainbow Song, sorting rainbow pom-poms, and making paint + shaving cream rainbow art!

Hope you and your families are staying safe. Praying that this storm is over soon. For now let’s focus on the rainbows...
